Ol’ Mac’s heirloom plantation

Mac married way too young
Though she bore him handsome sons
When the Great War finally comes
Ol’ Mac, he cuts and runs

He is determined to die well
So he joins the British flyers
He endures the training hell
Takeoff crashes, fatal fires

From the boards of a West End stage
Billie hosts flyboys at her flat
Both were ready to turn the page
One glance, and that was that

When you look her in the eye

She preserves her youthful beauty
In a small wax Tussaud doll
To keep him safe on duty
The best lucky charm of all

When a mishap breaks its arm
Mac sends that doll in for repairs
Next day, Mac’s pals grow alarmed
He flies into clouds and disappears

A glimpse of grief in the cocaine mirror
